Abstract:

[Andre Marrou], who was the Libertarian vice-presidential candidate in 1988, is a Nevada real estate broker and former Alaskan state legislator. He and his running mate, Nancy Lord, are on the ballot in all 50 states and pleased with the reception their ideas have been receiving.

Marrou himself has run into some problems within the Libertarian Party. In April, his former chief of staff unsuccessfully asked the party's national committee to remove Marrou from the ticket because of a long list of personal and financial problems.

The former aide, Michael Emerling, charged that Marrou owes more than $54,000 for 11 years of back child support to the second of his four wives. He also said that Marrou had left a trail of bad debts and misused a party credit card and campaign contributions to pay his personal expenses.

RESPONSE TO CHARGES

Marrou said he fired Emerling last year for unspecified improprieties and characterized the charges as "20 percent truth, 20 percent pure lies and 60 percent distorted truth and partial lies."

The child support problem was 20 years ago, he said, and "I paid what I could when I could."

He has had some financial problems in recent years, he said, and is clearing them up as quickly as possible. At the present time, all his expenses are being paid by the campaign.

"What I've been doing the last 10 years is, in my own way, fighting for liberty," Marrou said. "And in so doing, I haven't made much money."
